    SWIMMING AT DAWN

Come with me and swim at dawn. Feel, see and share with me what it is like to greet the morning and the sea each day. Become part of this soulful journey of exploration and renewal in this magical world that is the ocean and its environs. The sea awaits you.

In this video, I prepare for my immersion. My feet reach the water and my shadow merges with the aqua depths. I can feel the cool breeze on my skin and the salty water chilling my legs as the small waves break. I turn towards the sun to greet the new day as the golden light envelops me.

My Body the Ocean
Poetry
Two days after returning from Tenerife, I can still feel the gentle amniotic rock of the ocean's lullaby in my mind and body - lulling, soothing, healing. Time expands and slows as the lessons of this curious discipline of 'breathhold diving' (using British freediver Emma Farrell's definition of the sport) under the water continue to unfold within me back on land. The six days I spent learning how to freedive in Tenerife in mid-May 2023 proved magical - a journey into the frontiers of the self, ...

My Body the Ocean
Poetry
Over the course of the winter, I found myself settling into feelings and experiences of the past seasons, years, and cycles that manifested in different written and visual expressions. I enjoy transmitting what I feel in the water through video and photo and sometimes I create a story from an idea, an inspiration, a mood which may evolve into words and/or images. Winter Waters is a collection of six poems written and each accompanied by a corresponding video filmed from November to Feb...

Swimming at Dawn
Swimming at Dawn began as a testimony to the transformative power of cold water immersion without me realizing it. All of the articles, both my own and those written by other wild swimmers, are testimonials to the vast range of positive impacts engaging with water in open, natural spaces can have. In this article I delve more into the science behind what we (wild swimmers) all express, write about and know on an intuitive level. Perhaps you may consider incorporating som...

Octopus Encounters
In the sixth and final chapter of My Octopus Friend series, I tell the story of our final encounters. One day I went to visit her den and she had simply vanished. I always knew she would leave eventually, it's not uncommon to change dens every few weeks or so, but, as with all relationships, it's hard to say goodbye especially when there's no closure. In the end, I only have gratitude for an extraordinary 14 encounters with a magnificent creature and fellow 'ocean girl' - bonded by the life-givi...

Dawn Swimmer is me but she is also any woman. I didn't want this blog to be an expose of myself and consequently I've chosen to make it anonymous.

I would like anyone to identify with the call of the sea, the desire to challenge oneself, to connect with nature's beauty and the ever-changing moods of the day and ocean, as well as the process of growth and development that my daily journey to the sea has unexpectedly provided for me.

The person behind this is important but also unimportant.

As the journey and blog evolved, I decided I would like to create a space to hear the voices, reflections and experiences of other wild swimmers.

Here you will find stories, reflections and contributions from swimmers who value the inner aspects of being in and around the water, people for whom immersing themselves in the oceans, rivers, lakes, and waterfalls of the world provide countless benefits to heart, soul, body, mind and spirit. Explore the water in its immensity and grandeur through their eyes.

If you would like to contribute your own piece to Wild Swimmer Stories, please contact me at info@swimmingatdawn.com.
